The Southeastern Indiana Emmaus Community is an interdenominational Christian group under the auspices of the Upper Room Walk to Emmaus. The purpose of the Walk to Emmaus is to develop Christian disciples and leaders by inspiring, challenging, and equipping active adult church members for Christian action in their homes, churches, workplaces, and communities. It also benefits members who are less active and seeking to renew a relationship with God, grow spiritually, and/or discover firmer foundations for their lives.
Through The Walk to Emmaus, as they seek to become healthy and vital congregations, local churches have both a means of growing disciples and a tool for developing leaders for their disciple-making systems.
The program begins with a 72-hour "short course in Christianity" that is wrapped in prayer and signs of sacrificial service. It continues for the rest of participants' lives with follow-up groups that, along with the local church's robust offerings, contribute to participants' ongoing growth in grace.
The SEI Emmaus Community held their first "Walk to Emmaus" for women January 24th-27th in 1991. The Men's Walk followed in April form the 25th-28th 1991. The SEI Emmaus Community Emmaus Community offers these "Walks" two times per year: in the Spring and the Fall. These walks are separated into Men's Walks and Women's Walks. Presently, beginning with the Men's Walk first then the Women's walk the following weekend. The SEI Emmaus Community also offers opportunity for fellowship, food, and worship several times per year at "Gatherings". These take place the month prior to and following the Walks as well as, a picnic in the summer.
